Los Angeles Harold August 6, 1904 re: Bisbee (summerized): Life in Bisbee changed between the hours of 3 and 5 o’clock today. The city has a visit by the worst flood of water in it’s history. A cloudburst pours torrents of water down the Tombstone canyon. As a result, this storm inundates stores, streets and houses. It carried away everything portable.
As a result, several men are caught in the rushing flood. It carries them away hundreds of feet before rescue. Consequently, horses and wagons and mules and several small buildings wash away. They dump in a heap in the gullies. Especially relevant is the new subway that the Copper Queen company builds, carries off the water. This tunnel inadvertently saves the entire business part from annihilation.
Miner Strike 1917
First of all, the Bisbee Deportation was the illegal kidnapping and deportation of about 1,300 striking mine workers. Consequently, also deported were the striker’s supporters and citizen bystanders. This is accomplished by 2,000 members of a deputized posse on July 12, 1917.
Most importantly, the action is by Phelps Dodge, the predominant mining company in the area. Furthermore, Phelps Dodge provides lists of workers and others who face arrest. The arrests are first held at a local baseball park. As a result, they load strikers onto railroad cattle cars. Consequently, these railroad cars deport these people some 200 miles (320 km) to Tres Hermanas in New Mexico. The 16-hour journey is through desert without food or water.
Especially relevant is that Phelps Dodge colludes with the sheriff and closes down access to outside communications. The company hides their action and explains their measures as reducing threats to United States interests in World War I in Europe.
In conclusion, the Governor of New Mexico, in consultation with President Woodrow Wilson, provides temporary housing for the deportees. Consequently, a presidential mediation commission investigates the actions. Hence, a final report describes this deportation as “wholly illegal and without authority in law, either State or Federal.” Nevertheless, no individual, company, or agency is ever convicted for the deportation.
Finally, Bisbee life in the old times can be pretty tough. These are rare images from the turn of the century. I left watermarks off of them so you could enjoy the whole image. As a result, you may use my copyrighted images with my written permission and credit given to me.
